Leonard Matthew
Power
June 8, 1975 - November 25,
2024
Passed peacefully away at the Fort McMurray Regional hospital
at the age of 49. Matthew leaves to mourn the love of his life, his
darling Iuliia, and her daughter Melissa. Also leaving to mourn his
mother Roseanne Power of Branch, Newfoundland; Uncle Wayne and Aunt
Mary Power of Edmonton; Five brothers Justin (Lisa), Charles
(Victoria), James (Barb), Simon and Patrick; Two sisters Vicki (Doug)
and Elizabeth; as well as a large circle of family and
friends. Matthew was fond of and will be sorely missed by his
nephews and nieces: Brandon, Isaiah, Reagan, Braydan, Dylan,
Zoe, Max, Harry, Charley Rose, Frankie and
Dominic Sooley.
He is predeceased by his father Harold J, and sisters Brenda
and Mary Kathryn.
Matthew was well known and loved for his infectious laughter,
sometimes "in the fits" for no apparent reason. He loved to
talk and share his many opinions with everyone who would listen. Even
with a grim diagnosis, he never lost hope, kept everyone entertained,
and was optimistic to the end. Matthew’s palliative room was
the loudest and happiest room in the hospital where family and friends
gathered and partied, until he finally needed to rest.
Matthew worked for the city of Fort McMurray for the past ten
years and was very proud of his job. Thanks to his manager and
coworkers, especially John, for all their support and visits during
Matthew’s illness. The lunchroom is going to be very boring
without Matthew around. Matthew’s family would like to
extend a special thanks to Yolanda and BJ Coffey for their friendship
and support through
all his treatments.
In 2022, through strong willpower and determination, Matthew
conquered lifelong addictions and completely turned his life around.
To anyone struggling with addictions, Matthew’s example
shows, it can be done! He had big dreams and hopes for a bright future
with Iuliia, which were sadly cut short. However, Matthew appreciated
every day he had and spent every moment with Iuliia by
his
side right up to the end.
Visitation to take place at Holy Rosary Church, Branch
starting Sunday, December 1st. Mass of Christian Burial to be held at
10:30am on Tuesday, December 3rd at Holy Rosary Church.
